Orecchietta: from taste to design

The Humanistic library of Santa Maria Incoronata, in Milan, built in 1487, has been recently renovated and restored to its former beauty making it worthy of comparison to the better known Santa Maria delle Grazie library (Milan) and San Marco library (Florence). This library was the scene of the exhibition "orecchietta, from taste to design", held under the patronage of Apulia region from 18th to 23rd April 2007.

Valli&Valli l' ’Arredobagno decided to participate actively at this unique event, which hosted a contest involving a small group of young designers (not only Italian!), who were given the difficult but intriguing task of challenging the product/shape "orecchietta"…The orecchietta is a handmade food product, of course, but it is also the term which defines a heart cavity. It is right next to the heart, and symbolically means the place of our feelings, the organ that together with the brain governs our actions or even more so our emotions.

So perhaps just thanks to those emotions, which a real designer knows he has to provoke in order to give life to a project/product, strange and sometimes innovative interpretations and remakes of the orecchietta shape have been created. The orecchietta has definitely played the absolute and indisputable leading role of this exhibition.

From porcelain to ceramic to papier mâché; from felt to plastic; from fibre art to photography.
…..so many were the remakes, the contributions and reflections regarding the orecchietta…among which the seating that recaptured its concavity, modifying it, as illustrated by the stools designed by Anna Deplano: EASY stool with three legs and seat in orange leather and WOODY stool in iron rod with wooden seat both made for Valli&Valli l'Arredobagno.
Both the creations by Anna Deplano will be displayed in preview for the market on the occasion of CERSAIE 2007, which is going to take place in Bologna from 4th to 10th October 2007.

SCARLET HOTEL, Singapore

The latest "boutique" Hotel of the Scarlet hotel chain was opened in Singapore in December 2004, after the building, bought for more than 45 million dollars, had been completely renovated and enhanced. The hotel is situated in the extremely lively Club Street, realm of creative agencies, boutiques, fashionable restaurants, wine bars, antique shops and art galleries.
In order to enhance the historic context a handle was chosen that could fully suit the needs of a refined environment, that would be comfortable with a retro fashion taste that represents the strong point and appeal of the hotel.

Worn Series, design Michel Bouquillon, accessories in stainless steel

Today we concentrate on the WORN series created by Michel Boucquillon for Valli&Valli L’Arredobagno " Le Design est un geste qui rend ceux de l'utilisateur plus agréables ", Michel Boucquillon 1993

"ZEN" Collection
Minimalist and sensual, it seems that the pieces on the wall do not touch it, and that those free standing ones do not touch the ground. It is a series characterized by such a total lightness that it seems that the porcelain pieces are suspended in midair. Nevertheless it is very solid and made up of a steel sheet, cut and bent by the magic hand of Boucquillon.

Achille Castiglioni

The official website of Achille Castiglioni is online: http://www.achillecastiglioni.it/it/links.html

The wide ranging documentation on the website includes projects, pictures, photos, drawings, samples, videos, conferences, objects, books and magazines… in short a whole world in which Achille Castiglioni has been working for more than 60 years. Among the projects the collection H 310 Cinque C series designed by the architect for Fusital.
The production for this series takes into consideration a method of design where research of new forms originates from the choice of function: a slim silhouette, non-invasive, easily adaptable, a sign of optimism.

The door handle, at rest, is turned upwards to meet the hand. The gesture of opening is obtained through rotating the grip downwards through 90°. The project also includes a window handle with only a vertical segment to be delicately rotated for opening.
